Toasted Marshmallow Matcha Latte

February 1, 2024

‘Tis the season for everyone to be indulging in delicious warm beverages with a holiday spin. When visiting my favourite local coffee shop, I couldn’t help but notice the toasted marshmallow syrup listed among all the yummy holiday flavours. I ordered my usual matcha latte but left regretting not adding the festive syrup to my order.

The next day I was running errands, and there it was, a toasted marshmallow syrup sitting on shelves of a HomeSense. It was my shot at redemption, a sweet deliciously syrupy shot.

See, most people would add a toasted marshmallow syrup to coffee. But since quitting my love, I mean coffee, years ago, I pretty well only drink matcha now. I couldn’t help but wonder how the sweet, toasty, caramelized flavour and hint of smokiness would pair with the vibrant and earthy taste of matcha. That is when the idea of a toasted marshmallow matcha latte was born.

Features of the Toasted Marshmallow and Matcha Fusion

  • The toasted marshmallow syrup has the perfect amount of sweetness with a very distinct marshmallow taste (exactly what you want).
  • Combine the syrup with a warm latte milk and you get that creamy, ooey gooey vibe you’d have with an actual toasted marshmallow.
  • Now add in the matcha, and you get the perfect balance of sweet and toasty along with umami and earthy. A deliciously dynamic duo.

Crafting the Perfect Toasted Marshmallow Matcha Latte

What you’ll need:

Syrup: To get the sweet taste of toasted marshmallow, all you need is 1 – 2 pumps of syrup. I used two tablespoons but feel free to adjust to your liking.

Warm Milk: For this latte I chose oat milk because it adds the perfect amount of creaminess.

Matcha: I find 1.5 teaspoons of matcha powder to be the perfect amount but it definitely depends on your preference. The brand I use is DoMatcha.

The Toasted Marshmallow Trifecta

The syrup, milk and matcha are really all you need to get the essence of the tasty toasted marshmallow latte but I wanted to take it to the next level. I like to call it the toasted marshmallow trifecta: Toasted Marshmallow Flower Cookies, Marshmallow Fluff, and Toasted Marshmallow Toppers and/or torched marshmallows.

I once saw a video of someone making marshmallow cookies on Instagram and saved it knowing one day I’d be making my own. This toasted marshmallow matcha latte was the perfect occasion.

The Trifecta

Baked Marshmallow Flowers: Using Dandies marshmallows, simply make 5 cuts (careful to not cut all the way through) and arrange to make a flower.

Marshmallow Fluff: The flowers were not enough. I wanted more marshmallows. Do you know that marshmallow fluff you can get in a jar? I wanted a vegan version of that. Almost like a vegan marshmallow whip cream. Guess who makes a vegan marshmallow fluff? It Doesn’t Taste Like Chicken. This was the perfect addition to this dreamy latte. Find her recipe for Vegan Marshmallow Fluff here.

Toasted Marshmallows: To top off the marshmallow extravaganza that is this latte, I used a culinary blowtorch to lightly toast a few Dandies marshmallows on top of the latte.

Again, the trifecta is optional. I recommend it for a delightful experience but the syrup in your matcha latte will still be enough to rock your world. This is for those who want a marshmallow overload ;). I went even further and added a few marshmallows that I lightly toasted with a culinary torch.
